79 years ago today, on the Friday of the 18th September 1942, Private Charles H Bunyan, 36th Battalion (Reg No-2286), stonemason from 7 Crompton Street, Hamilton, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 47. METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) I SW. 67.

No funeral or death notice located.

Born at Rookwood, New South Wales on the 29th January 1895 to William and Sara A Bunyan; husband of Emeline (Emmelina, Emily) Mary Jane Bunyan nee Byrnes (married 1921, Penrith, N.S.W., died 1970? Penrith, N.S.W.), Charles enlisted February 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 7.6.1917 (SW leg & back, Battle of Messines), 11.7.1917 (splinter below right eye), 2.4.1918 (GSW left forearm, Villers Bretonneux).
Admitted to hospital 19.6.1918 (influenza), 31.8.1918 (structure of urethra).

Charles was invalided home December 1918, being discharged medically unfit on the 6th March 1919.

Mr. Bunyan’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial - photos, unveiled on the 20th May 1922, 627 names originally inscribed, 634 names now inscribed, 98 Fallen), Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Hamilton Superior Public School Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies on Charles’s white marble headstone in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King and Country.

Service record states Died after Discharge,17/9/1924, should be 1942.
