Distinguished Conduct Medal
'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as a runner, carrying despatches through heavy barrages. When the position of one of the new forward posts was obscure, he succeeded, under heavy fire, in locating it. It would otherwise have been cut off.'

"HERALD" BOY GAINS HONOR
Mr and Mrs John McFarlane, 370 Graham street, Port Melbourne,
have received word that thelr eldest son, No. 2317, Lance-Corporal John C. McFarlane, 22nd Victorian Battalion, has been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for gallantry under heavy fire. Lance-
Corporal McFariane enlisted in July, 1915, at the age of 18 years, and sailed six weeks later. On arrival in England he was Immediately
sent to France. At the age of 14 he was employed as a messenger
boy in "The Herald" Office.
