Roy Cresswell was badly wounded at Messines on 7 June 1917 with the 40th Battalion. He recovered to soldier on through 1918, being awarded a Military Medal for his work as a stretcher bearer over a period of several days from 29 September 1918. “Under continuous artillery and machine gun fire, he tendered wounded and carried them back to the R.A.P. On one occasion, he dressed the wounds of four men and carried them to safety under direct rifle and machine gun fire. His devotion to duty and determination throughout the operations were most marked.”
His brother, 6985 Pte. Edmund Cresswell 12th Battalion AIF died of sickness at sea near South Africa, on his way to the war, 15 February 1917.
They were the sons of Walter Newton and Sophia Cresswell of Deloraine, Tasmania.
