Biography contributed by Robert Wight

Military Medal

'Immediately east of HAMEL, at 4.45 a.m. on the morning of the 8th August, 1918, No. A5782 Private J.D. WORK was one of a party detailed to go forward in advance of his Company, which was engaged on forward roads some 2,000 yards ahead of our old front line. Following closely up to the Infantry, a patrol was sent forward owing to the heavy mist, and Private WORK showed great gallantry and resource in the face of rifle and machine gun fire, mopping up several dugouts that had been passed over by the Infantry. owing greatly to the initiative, coolness and example that Private WORK set to the rest of the party, the small enemy Posts were quickly cleared up, and the Company was able to get onto its work more expeditiously than would have been otherwise possible. By his action, he greatly assisted in having the road work completed to allow the guns and other transport to get forward in time to follow up the advance.'
