At the time of enlistment Joseph was residing in Leonora, WA.

Son of Patrick Vaughan and Ellen Vaughan of New Street, Parramatta, NSW.

Served his five year tailoring apprenticeship with G. Hill of Parramatta, NSW.

On 16 January 1919 Joseph married Janet Blaylock in they Theydon Marnon Parish Church, Essex, England. Rector Walter P. Rowley officiated.

Commenced return to Australia on 5 September 1919 aboard HT Plassy disembarking on 17 October 1919
