26.3.14: Co. 4th Australian Battalion. During operations in Bullecourt, Messines and Ypres 26.2.14-29 This LCO has carried many responsible convoys of ammunition to battery positions under heavy enemy shellfire. His devotion to duty and resourcefulness under most trying difficulties have come unde3r notice on many occasions. He has proved himself a very valuable and reliable soldier.

Commenced return to Australia, first time, on 29 July 1915 aboard HS Hororata as wounded disembarking on 18 August 1915. Returned to duty at Blackboy Hill on 5 December 1915 before embarking overseas in February 1916.
