Peter Bruce was born in Watness, Caithness, Scotland in 1885. His parents were Alexander and Charlotte Bruce of that town. He had come to Australia when he was about 23 years of age during 1908.
His younger brother Henry also came to Australia later on and they were both connected to Townsville, Queensland. 2560 Private Henry Bruce 15th Battalion AIF, was killed in action on 1 February 1917, age 25.
Henry and Peter Bruce are both remembered on the War Memorial at Watten in Scotland, though Henry is remembered as ‘Harry.’
Peter Bruce joined up with the 9th Battalion AIF but was transferred to the 13th Light Trench Mortar Battery during the fighting at Pozieres in 1916.
He died in unknown circumstances during the heavy fighting in Belgium on 25 September 1917 and has no known grave.
