Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of Silas BAULCH and Emily BAULCH nee BROWN, Macarthur, Victoria.

June 1917 - Word has been received from Base Records by Mr. Silas Baulch, of Burns-street, that his son, Private L. S. D. Baulch, had been admitted to the Royal Victorian  hospital in England suffering from gunshot wounds. Later a cable message from Private Baulch states that he is getting on well.

Just 13 months later Leith had been killed in action.

THE LATE PRIVATE L. S. D. BAULCH

In expressing the sympathy of the members of his company in the death on active service, of Private L.S.D. Baulch, Lieutenant H. Fenton writes as follows from France to the deceased's soldier's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Baulch, of Burns-street. Hamilton. "He occupied a very high place in the affection and esteem of his company, and his loss is deeply regretted by officers and men alike.''

The officer in giving particulars of the events which led up to the death of Private Baulch, stated that on the 14th April his platoon occupied an advanced position in the line hastily  formed to impede the German advance in the vicinity of Nieppe Forest, when under cover of very heavy trench-mortar and machine gun fire, the enemy attacked the posts in  force and took the position after practically blowing the company out of their trenches and almost annihilating the platoon, three others besides the officer in command being the  only ones to come through unwounded. Both before and after the engagement Private Baulch behaved splendidly, and with the rest of the boys put up a good fight until struck down instantly.
