Born in, and resident of, Newtown, Reading. He was in the local Boy Scouts and a Piper in the YMCA. He is remembered on the war memorial in the Alfred Sutton Junior School, Wokingham Road, Reading, Berkshire where Fred was a pupil. This is a school memorial for former pupils and it takes the form of a white marble tablet in the hall of the school.

Enlisted aged 16-died aged 18.
