Charles Robert POAD was born in 1890 in Callington, Cornwall, England to John George Bennett POAD and Mary Ann ROBERTS

His family including his parents and sisters went from UK to Canada in 1896 - whilst there his Father John died in Ontario in 1898 and then the family returned to England

His Mother Mary stayed in England with her two daughters Beatrice Grace & Ada Elizabeth and the two boys Charles & his brother John went to Fremantle in Western Australia and stayed with an Edwin & Margaret POAD in Kalgoorlie

Charles & John arrived in Western Australia in 1900 on the ship Omrah - in 1920 their Mother & sister also came to WA on the ship Osterley - His mother Mary died in 1925 in Dunedin in New Zealand

Charles enlisted in Kalgoorlie on 24th January, 1915 with the 11th Battalion  -he was with the 5th reinforcements who embarked on 29th April, 1915 from Fremantle on the HMAT Hororata

He was Killed in Action on 20th August, 1916 - No known grave

His name is memorialised at St Dominic Church War Memorial in England, Villers Bretonneux Memorial and the Australian War Memorial

He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal

Sadly his brother John Henry POAD (Service No. 5219) who was with the 16th Infantry Battalion also lost his life in WW1 and died of wounds on 11th June, 1918

POAD - In loving memory of our dear sons and brothers Corporal C R Poad who was killed in action at Pozieres between the 20th & 23rd August, 1916 and Private J H Poad who died of wounds on the 11th June 1918.

"They were only brave lads in khaki, two of Australias pride,

Fighitng for sunny Australia, and like two heroes died

We pictured you safe returning, and longed to clasp your hands

But God has postponed our meeting dear ones

It will be in a better land"

POAD - In loving memory of our dear sons and brothers , Private J H Poad who died of wounds at 47th Casualty Station on the 11th June 1918 and Corporal C R Poad who was killed in action at Pozieres between the 20th & 23rd August, 1918

A mother and sisters loving prayers, for tears are seen & signs are heard and thoughts regarded there"

Also my dear husband & father who died 13th January 1898 in Ontario Canada,  

"We shall meet our loved ones again"
