Berty Eugene Wood
Berty was my Grandmothers Uncle, her name was Eugenie May Wood and yes she was named after him.
Berty was born 21/9/1899, Smithton, Tasmania to Albert Joseph and Ethel May Wood (nee Boote)
.He enlisted on 4/3/1916
His occupation prior to enlisting was a printer, address Devonport, Tasmania.
Enlistment date 20/3/1916, his AWM embarkation Roll number 23/57/1 and he embarked from Hobart on board the HMAT Berrima on 1 July 1916.
He was killed in action 13/10/1917.
I have been doing my family research and was very interested to find out about Berty and his brother, (my Great Grandfather), who was an original ANZAC, with the 12th Battalion.
I am not sure what has happened to Bertys medals as there was some confusion as to where to send correspondence, (next of kins address seems to be wrong) and quite sadly his mother passed away in August 1918. She sent a letter dated 26 November 1917 asking for Bertys items to be returned. This letter is filed with his attestation papers in the National Archives. Family story is that she died of a broken heart, something we will never know.
My family never really spoke about the war years, so I was amazed and saddened when finding all this out 90 odd years later and as you can imagine there are not many members left to ask..... so pleased you are getting the stories out there
