Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Gladstone was the son of William James and Caroline Todd, of Launceston, Tasmania. He was one of the first Australians to enlist, August 1914, and sailed with the First Expeditionary Force.

He served on Gallipoli from May 1915 and was evacuated sick on two occasions. He fought with the 3rd Light Horse Regiment through the Middle East until he was mortally wounded, bomb wounds to the chest, on 20 April 1917, and died the same day in the Anzac Casualty Clearing Station.

His brother, 4306 Gunner George Benson Todd Australian Artillery, was killed in action 24 April 1918.

It was reported in the newspaper that he commenced his banking career at the National Bank, St. Mary's, and was afterwards promoted to the Sheffield branch, where he was accepted for active service abroad. The writer stated “Gladstone was a boy of excellent character, and had a brilliant future in front of him had he been spared.”
