Biography contributed by Modbury High School

Fry Frank Jonas was born 26th of September 1896, to his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Sara Fry, and his Father John Henry Fry in Baroota near Wirrabara, South Australia. During his youth, he moved to Williamstown. He grew up in a small house with his seven older siblings and one younger.

Before enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force, Fry worked as a labourer. At the age of 19 and 2 months, he enlisted on December 4th, 1915, at Keswick, South Australia. He was assigned to the 3rd Australian Light Horse Regiment as a Private.

He embarked for active service to Egypt on April 26, 1916, from Port Adelaide aboard HMAT A59 Botanist on the 26/4/16. During his time abroad he suffered from many illnesses ranging from tonsillitis to malaria, causing him to constantly receive care at hospitals in Egypt. Frank Fry fought bravely the First World War for exactly two years and 309 days and was awarded the British War Medal, Victory Medal, and the Star Medal in recognition of his service.

Frank returned to Australia on the 28th of February 1919 per the HT “Demosthenes”. He was later discharged on the 25th of May 1919.

He moved to Blacktown New South Wales, where he married Gertrude Alice Taylor. In the year 1920 the pair welcomed there first son, Frank Edwin Fry to the world, closely followed by John and Joyce Fry. They would later be blessed with a grandson in 1943 by their eldest son, who would also sadly pass in 1975 at the age of 55. On the 22nd of October 1989 Gertrude passed away, where she was buried at Pinegrove Memorial Park New South Wales. For the 10-years following Frank lived alone but kept close to his growing family. But sadly, on the 29th of January 1993 he passed away at the age of 96. He was buried next to his wife and son at the Pinegrove Memorial Park.
