Edward's younger brother 4576 Pte Joseph Ernest Ryan 58th Battalion AIF, who enlisted on the same day, was also killed in action, at Fromelles on 19 July 1916. Edward was reported by his mother to have walked the battlefield at Fromelles ooking for his brother without success. Another older brother, 6070 James Thomas Ryan 38th Battalion returned to Australia in 1919.
