World War 1 Service

18 Sep 1914: Enlisted AIF WW1, Private, 1018, 11th Infantry Battalion
1 Nov 1914: Embarked AIF WW1, Private, 1018, 11th Infantry Battalion, Donald embarked at Fremantle on Ship A11 (HMAT Ascanius) on November 1 which then sailed to Albany to join the first Australian troop convoy to leave Australia. Ship A11 joined the convoy on 3 November 1914 for the journey to join the war in Europe.

30 May 1915: Wounded AIF WW1, Private, 1018, 11th Infantry Battalion, ANZAC / Gallipoli, Donald suffered a gunshot wound to the arm on 30 May which led him to being treated in hospital. On 15 June he was declared fit and he rejoined his unit at the front.
12 Jul 1916: Discharged AIF WW1, Private, 1018, 11th Infantry Battalion, In August, while serving at the Dardanelles, Donald suffered a severe bout of diarrhea which necessitated him being hospitalized in the field hospital. Donald was then evacuated to hospitals in Lemnos and then in Egypt where he was diagnosed with valvular disease of the Heart. Donald was deemed unfit for active duty and on 3 November 1915 he was invalided back to Australia on HT Aeneas for discharge which occurred on 12 July 1916.

Donald was the son of James Hodgskin Phillips, a brewer from Faversham, Kent England and Ninon Marie Trinette Cotterell, who was born in France.  Donald was raise in a large English family, he had six siblings, where his father was employed.

Donald migrated to Western Australia at age nineteen years from his home in England arriving in Fremantle on the SS Seydlitz on the 23 May 1910 in company with his elder brother James, departing from Bremen in Belgium.

Donald was employed as a Shunter with the Western Australian Railways leading up to WWI and then after the war continue his employment with the WAGR.  At retirement Donald was employed as an Engine Driver.

At the time of enlistment in WWI, Donald was residing in Perth.  In 1946 Donald married Annie Eileen O'Neil and they resided in Doubleview a Perth suburb, and then when at the RSL Retirement Village in Mount Lawley.  Donald and Annie did not have children.

Donald was awarded the 1914/1915 Star, British War Medal 1914-20, the Victory Medal and the ANZAC Commemorative Medallion.

Donald Phillips' ashes were interned at Karrakatta Cemetery EC Section Garden 29 position 0184 where his wife's ashes were also interned. Donald is also memorized on Wall 16 Row A in the Western Australian Garden of Remembrance adjacent to the Perth War Cemetery at Karrakatta.
