He embarked from Melbourne (VIC) on the 9th October, 1916 on Clan MacEwen (A65) as 13th Reinforcements for 11th Light Horse Regiment, and he arrived in Suez on the 8th November, 1916. Three days later, he reported and was taken onto strength into the 3rd Light Horse Training Regiment at Moarcar. On 23rd January, 1917 he was forfeited 2 days pay due to military discipline. On the 24th February, he was transferred to the 4th Light Horse Training Regiment. He reported on the 3rd March and on the same day he was transferred to the 4th Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron and was taken onto strength the following day. On the 23rd June, 1917 he was sent to hospital and was discharged from the hospital on the 29th. Towards the end of the war, he went into hospital 3 more times and embarked with HMAT Orsova (A67) on the 19th January, 1919. On the 20th February, 1919 he returned to Australia, and at the 1st Military District on the 13th April, 1919 he was discharged.
