Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Michael and Patrick Scanlan were brothers from the town of Pittsworth in the Darling Downs farming area of Queensland. Michael enlisted with the 47th Battalion and joined the unit in France during late 1916. He was promoted to Corporal during February 1917 before he was killed in action at the Battle of Messines on 7 June 1917. Hand written entry in his service records suggests he was buried 750 yards east of Messines. He was 37 years of age and his name is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial in Belgium. His brother Patrick was serving with a different Queensland unit, the 42nd Battalion, and was killed during the same battle only three days later.
