Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Driver Horace James Matthews (Service No:3528) enlisted in the AIF on 14 December 1914 and served in Egypt and France with 1st Divisional Ammunition Column and 1st Field Artillery Brigade. In 1915 concerns were raised that Driver Matthews had died (National Archives Australia) following receipt of a letter - 'No word has been received from Private Matthews for some time and three brothers who have since gone to Egypt have written home that they have not seen him and it was generally known that he had Died'. This was not the case, and Driver Matthews served in France before embarking from Plymouth for the RTA on 8 April 1917 on board HMAT Barambah. Private Matthews was Discharged (Medical) on 7 July 1917. He enlisted for the second time on 21 May 1919 at the Molongo Internment Camp (Fyshwick) ACT where he served as a Guard (Service No:85840) escorting PoWs back to Europe.

Born in 1886 in Goulburn NSW, Horace was the fifth of nine children of William Matthews (b1851 in Gloucestershire, England) and Mary Jane Mulholland (b1853 in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland). William  immigrated with his parents and siblings in 1858, arriving in Sydney NSW on board the Golconda, and Mary immigrated with her parents and siblings in 1862, arriving in Sydney NSW on board the Ocean Empress. William (an Engine Stoker) and Mary married in Picton, Sydney NSW in 1877 and settled in Goulburn, NSW where they raised their family and William worked as an Engine Driver. In 1913 William died as a result of a fall from the engine he was driving.

Horace worked as a Storekeeper and Draper and following his Discharge from the AIF, in 1919 in Sydney NSW married May Lowrey (b1893 in Inverell, NSW). Horace and May settled in Sydney where they raised their family and Horace was a Department Manager. Horace died in 1931 and May in 1943.
