Biography contributed by Bradley Bliss
Robert Clyde Jones was born in Forbes in 1895 and was a labourer. He enlisted on 11th January 1916 just 6 days after his 21st birthday.
Jones was unmarried with both his parents passed away. His next of kin is listed as his stepbrother, Perceival Lewis who lived in Sydney.
Jones commenced his service as a Private with the 56th Infantry Battalion in Egypt in May of 1916. He was later reallocated to the British Expeditionary Force in France. In less than a year he was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal. Sadly, Jones was killed in action just 5 months later on the 26th September 1917 somewhere in the fields of France or Belgium. He was just 22 years of age.
Jones died taking part in the famous Battle of Polygon Wood. It is not surprising that he has no known grave, many bodies were lost and makeshift graves destroyed during heavy fighting such as that at Polygon Wood.
Lance Corporal Robert Clyde Jones’ name appears on the Menin Gate Memorial in Belgium.
