Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

340 Lance Corporal Reginald Rupert Bond was born in Kaniva Victoria. He and his best mate, Dan O’Leary were both working at Walbran & Co merchants in Rushworth when they decided to enlist. Both men were shot either in the boats or close to where they landed near Fishermans Hut on the morning of April 25 1915. Another man from Rushworth, Alf Baldwin 7th Battalion was killed at the same time and buried in the same cemetery.

An eye-witness account says that Reg and Dan died within seconds of each other. They had just come ashore when Reg Bond was shot dead. Private George Silver later verified that “Dan O’Leary, his pal, took his cap from him, put it on and down he went, holed like Reg. It may sound far-fetched – two men killed wearing the same cap – but I saw it.”
