Francis John Toner was born in 1883 - one of twins (the other was Margaret Anne) born to John Toner and Catherine Hart Mclernon Toner. He was one of 5 children born from Catherines second marriage. His father John Toner died 1903 in Western Australia. At some stage he got involved with a Grace Haenel and had two children with her - Doris born 1909 and Eric born 1911. Grace and Francis never married and the children were eventually adopted out while Grace eventually married someone else. Francis joined up in 1914.
