82 years ago today, on the Sunday afternoon of the 24th August 1941, Private Walter Gordon Sutherland, 14th Australian Light Horse Regiment (Reg No-3081), engineer (Walsh Island Government Dockyard, Newcastle, N.S.W.), from Nile Street, Mayfield, New South Wales and 98 Elizabeth Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., father of one (Hazel), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 41. PRESBYTERIAN-16NE. 46.

Born at Cooks Hill, New South Wales on the 12th April 1900 to John and Ellen Sutherland; husband of May J L Sutherland nee Kelly (married 1922, Wickham, N.S.W., died 1977?), Walter enlisted on the 8th March 1917 with the April 1917 Reinforcements at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A15 Port Sydney on the 9th May 1917.
Admitted to hospital 9.12.1917 (malaria), 14.8.1918 (discharge right ear), 9.2.1919 (measles).

Walter returned home on the 28th August 1919, being discharged on the 28th September 1919.

Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, returning home, etc.

Mr. Sutherland’s name has been inscribed on the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church (Newcastle) Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
