Belford EARL was born in 1893 in Narrabri, NSW as Belford Wellington SWEETMAN

His parents were Edward EARL and Bertha Sophia SWEETMAN

He enlisted as a Private at Warwick Farm NSW to serve in WW1 and embarked from Sydney on the HMAT Euripides on the 2nd November, 1915 with the 3rd Infantry Battalion, 11th reinforcements

He was transferred to the 55th Infantry Battalion on 13th February, 1916 as part of the 'doubling up' of the AIF & sent to France for service on the Western Front several weeks later.

Belford was wounded on 20th July, 1916  with a gun shot wound to his foot and again on 9th May, 1917 at the 2nd Battle of Bullecourt, when he was admitted to the 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station & then transferred to the ambulance train with shell  & gun shot wounds - he was then admitted to the 13th General Hospital in Boulogne in France & died from his wounds on 11th May, 1917

He is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, Plot IV, Row B, Grave 15

Inscription reads:

'IN MEMORY OF THE DEARLY LOVED SON OF MR. & MRS. EARL OF MOONGULLA, AGED 24 YEARS"

His name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial & the Roll of Honour in Narrabri, NSW - he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal & the Victory Medal.
