Son of William Tilly Vagg and Sarah Vagg nee McKinnon of 'Goodrest', Carrum, Victoria. Brother of George Leslie Vagg who returned to Australia on 12 May 1916 having served with the 5th Battalion.

Commenced return to Australia on 5 January 1919 aboard HT Kanowna disembarking on 7 March 1919
