Biography contributed by Adelaide High School

Herry Kelly was born in approximately December 1895 in Adelaide, South Australia. He lived with his grandparents at East street, Torrensville. After finishing schooling, he worked as a cabinet marker, until the war broke out. Harry then felt the obligation to fight for his country.

On 31 August 1915 at the age of 20 Kelly enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force. Kelly Harry was assigned to the 13th reinforcement to the 16th Infantry Battalion. Then on the 16th March 1916, he got transferred to the 4th Pioneer battalion and remained with them in France until July 1917. He spent most of his time after that ill in hospital and returned to Australia in March 1918.

He was well in touch with his grandparents as he sent them letters.

Kelly received two medals: The Victory Medal and The British War medal. Eventually he was discharged from the AIF on 22 July 1918.
