Son of John Voss and Elizabeth Voss nee Rout of Glen Huon, Tasmania
Brother of Oscar Voss who returned to Australia on 21 November 1917 having served with the 40th Battalion and Lewis Voss.
Commenced return to Australia on 22 December 1918 aboard HT Bakara disembarking on 16 February 1919 at Melbourne for onward travel to Hobart

On 10 February 1920 Herbert married Alice Pretoria Jackson in Newtown, Tasmania.
