11 Dec 1919: | Honoured Distinguished Conduct Medal, "The Last Hundred Days", 'He has acted as platoon sergeant during the period 25 February to 16 September 1918 serving continuously with his unit, and often having charge of the platoon during the absence of his platoon commander. At Messines, in February and March, he constantly led fighting patrols, and showed great gallantry and devotion to duty. During April, May and June, when the battalion was in the Hamel sector, he again displayed great skill and gallantry as a patrol leader. His work throughout has been of a very high standard.' Served bravely during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
65 years ago today, on the 14th August 1958, Sergeant Edwin Hollway Mathews (D.C.M.), 30th Battalion (Reg No-481), saw mill operator from Charlestown, Newcastle, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 70. ANGLICAN 3-201. 44.
Born at Carrington, New South Wales on the 8th April 1888 to Henry James and Martha D Mathews; husband of Omega Mathews nee Archer (married 1940, Wallsend, N.S.W., died 27.4.1965, sleeping here), Edwin enlisted on the 10th July 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A72 Beltana on the 9th November 1915.
Admitted to hospital 12.12.1915 (mumps), 16.8.1917 (scabies).
Awarded Distinguished Conduct Medal 1.1.1919.

Edwin returned home on the 26th June 1919, being discharged on the 14th December 1919.
Mr. Mathews’s name has been inscribed on the Belmont Memorial Hall Roll of Honour and the Belmont Methodist Church Honour Roll.
Not officially commemorated.
I have placed poppies at Edwin’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
