Private Albert Thomas Vowles (Service No:1782) served with Senior Cadets for two years before enlisting in the AIF on 22 January 1916 with 39th Infantry Battalion. Private Vowles embarked from Melbourne for Alexandria with 57th Infantry Battalion on 4 April 1916 on board HMAT A14 Euripides, and from Alexandria he embarked for Marseille, France on board Transylvania on 17 June 1916 and served in France. Private Vowles embarked from England for Melbourne on 23 June 1919 on board HT Orita and was attached to 58th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 29 September 1919.
Born in 1895 in Waterloo Victoria, Albert was eldest of five children of George Thomas Vowles (b1867 in Maryborough, Victoria) and Amy Maude Martin (b1871 in Amherst, Victoria). George (a Miner) and Amy married in 1893 in Maryborough, Victoria and settled in Waterloo where by 1898 George was Licensed Victualler/Publican of the Lexton Hotel. George and Amy raised their family in Waterloo - George was a Publican and Farmer.
Albert was a Farmer when he enlisted in the AIF, and in 1919 in Maryborough, Victoria married Isabella Cousins (b1893 in Shelbourne, Victoria). Albert and Isabella settled in Beaufort where they raised their family and Albert worked as a Farmer, Labourer and Linesman. Albert and Isabella both died in 1968 - Isabella in February and Albert in September.
