71 years ago today, on the Wednesday morning of the 25th June 1952, Private John Frederick Smee, 12th Australian Light Horse Regiment (Reg No-1361), labourer from Murrurundi, New South Wales and 60 Silsoe Street, Mayfield, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 58. CATHOLIC 2-33. 137.

Born at Murrurundi, New South Wales on the 16th May 1894 to Alfred George and Kathleen or Catherine Smee; husband of Violetta (Nellatta, Lettie) Maria Smee nee Hansen (married 17.7.1915, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 2.1.1967, age 70, sleeping here), John enlisted on the 4th August 1915 at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A66 Uganda on the 20th November 1915.
Admitted to hospital 8.2.1916 (mumps, mild), 9.7.1916 (myalgia), 7.10.1918 (not stated).

John was invalided home on the 9th June 1919, not being discharged until the 7th February 1920.

Mr. Smee’s name has been inscribed on the Murrurundi Shire War and Services Honour Roll and the Murrurundi & Warrah Shire Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at John’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Older brother William Joseph (born 10.3.1892, Murrurundi, New South Wales, butcher from Little Street, Murrurundi, New South Wales, enlisted 4.8.1915, Camel Corps, Reg No-1717, RTA 28.8.1919, 12th Australian Light Horse Regiment, died 18.1.1969, age 76, not officially commemorated) also resting at the cemetery. CATHOLIC 3-86. 55.
