Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
Bertie Pring disembarked in France with the 14th Battalion on 8 June 1916. Three weeks later he was mortally wounded by a sniper soon after the Battalion entered the front line. In the history of the 14th Battalion he is stated to be the first man of the unit to lose his life on the Western Front.
Bertie's parents were James and Mary Jane Pring of Ballarat. His father, a cooper, had passed away when he was only 14 years of age. His widowed mother received a pension of 2 pounds per fortnight.
Bertie's uncle 4855 Private John Pring 50th Battalion enlisted in South Australia and was killed in action a few months later.
