Biography contributed by John Oakes

Michael John MCBRIDE (Service Number 21083) was born on 29th September 1892 at Walcha Road. He first worked for the NSW Government Railways as a casual cleaner at Werris Creek from 27th February 1912 for more than a year. He was made a permanent employee on 16th November 1913. In July 1914 he progressed to fireman. A year later he relocated to Lismore. Soon after his taking up duties there he was granted leave to join the Expeditionary Forces in October 1915 though, he had in fact enlisted at Lismore a few weeks before on 22nd September. At that time, he was not married and gave his father still living at Walcha Road as his next of kin.

Allotted to the 35th Battery of the 9th Field Artillery Brigade, McBride embarked HMAT ‘Argyllshire’ on 11th May 1916, reaching Devonport on 10 July 1916.He spent the rest of 1916 in training. In March 1917 he was hospitalised with mumps and it was June 1917 before he proceeded overseas to France and July before he joined the 6th Australian Field Artillery Brigade. He was posted to the Brigade Artillery Column. In November he transferred to the 17th Battery.

He was wounded by shrapnel with a compound fracture of his right arm on 20th May 1918. Although he reached the 6th Australian Field Ambulance and the 61st Casualty Clearing Station he died of those wounds the same day. No details of the place or circumstances of his wounding have survived.

He was buried at Vignacourt at map reference 1/100,000.LENS.11.C.6. Rev H V O’Neil chaplain attached to the 61st CCS officiated. This place is now known as Vignacourt British Cemetery, France.
