Like many recruits, William was initially rejected by the 1st A.I.F. due to having poor teeth. After being successful upon his second attempt to enlist and completing basic training, he embarked HMS Ormah at Melbourne on 17 January 1917, reaching Plymouth, England on 27 March. His unit went to France in July where William continued to serve until the cessation of hostilities. He left England on the Port Melbourne on 5 July 1919, reaching Australia on 18 August and was discharged on 25 September.
