Son of Walter Hook and late Rachel Hook of 'Kincord', Old South Head Road, Rose Bay, NSW

At the time of enlistment he was employed with the Government Savings Bank of New South Wales, Moore Street, Sydney, NSW

On 22 January 1918 he was granted twelve months leave absence so he could accept the Soldiers Scholarship in Economics at the Christ College, Cambridge, England. After that was completed he asked for an six to 12 months extension to study law
