Timothy O'Brien enlisted with his brother Daniel O'Brien in Melbourne. Both had been born in Ireland, the sons of Michael and Annie O'Brien, of Lissavane, West Milltown, Co. Kerry, Irleand.

Daniel went on to be a Sergeant in the 59th Battalion and was twice severly wounded. He was sent home to Australia during 1919. He died in 1923, aged 37.
