Born George Oswald Beer McNichol, Oswald was the 2nd of 7 children of William McNicholand Ellen Janet Beer. Prior to enlisting in the AIF in 1914, Oswald had served for over 12 years in the Colonial Militia B Coy 4th Infantry. Oswald married Florence Isabel Ruth Shanks in January 1908 in Gympie QLD

A miner in Gympie QLD prior to enlisting, Oswald returned to Gympie where he worked as a Miner following his Discharge in 1916.

By 1919 Oswald and his family moved to Brisbane, QLD where he was employed as a Conductor until his death from Miner's Phthisis in 1931
