Son of John Colbert and Mary Jane Colbert nee Robertson of Carsibrook, Victoria.

Brother of John Colbert who returned to Australia on 4 January 1919 having served with the 39th Battalion and Edward John Colbert who was killed in action on the 11 October 1917 while serving with the 46th Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on Menin Gate, Ypres

Pte 1835 Sydney James Colbert embarked from Egypt on 22 May 1915 and arrived off Gallipoli on 26 May 1915. He was killed in action while disembarking from a destroyer into a barge to be taken to the beach.
