Percy was one of 10 children of Samuel Percy and Annie Maria Campbell of Little Billabong via Germantown NSW. The town of Germanton in the eastern Riverina district of NSW changed its name to Holbrook in 1915.
His older brothers 4964 Private Archibald Duncan Campbell 3rd Battalion AIF was killed in action at Pozieres 17 August 1916, age 25, and 6719 Lance Corporal Ronald Allan Thomas Campbell 8th Battalion AIF was killed in action 23 August 1918 aged 26.
Percy William Campbell was awarded a Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty’ as a stretcher bearer rescuing wounded under heavy fire during September 1918. He returned to Australia during 1919.
