Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks
The local paper, Bathurst National Advocate reported during September 1918, Mrs. P. Hicks, 14 Seymour Street, Bathurst, yesterday received official information that her son, Lance-Corporal Walter Hicks, was killed in action in France on August 22. The dead soldier, who was a native of Bathurst, enlisted in Cootamundra over two years ago. Previously to meeting his death, he had been gassed. This is the second son that Mrs. Hicks has lost at the front, Private A. P. Hicks having died of wounds in May last. Another son, Private A. D. Hicks, is at present in the firing line. He was wounded about twelve months ago. Truly, the Hicks family have 'done their bit' in the way of the supreme sacrifice for the Empire, and Mrs. Hicks will have the deepest sympathy of the whole community in the loss of her two brave soldier sons."
Walter's older brother, 7000 Pte. Alfred Phillip Hicks 13th Battalion AIF, had been killed in action only a few monyhs prior, on 8 May 1918, aged 33.
