Additional periods of hospitalisation occurred from April to July due to influenza. Three days after rejoining his unit he was wounded in action on a second occasion when shot in the left arm. Treatment necessitated Rudolph being sent to Southern General Hospital in Bristoe, England on 7 August, enabling him to rejoin the 43rd in France on 22 November. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 29 December.
On 20 May 1918 Rudolph was wounded in action on a 3rd occasion when gassed at Rouen. He was invalided to England and treated at the 5th General Military Hospital at Frensham Hill and later at Harefield. He was diagnosed as having tuberculosis.
