Private Alexander Woods is listed as a native of Meadows Creek near Orange though was residing in Cudal when he enlisted for the First World War on the 17th April, 1916. Prior to joining the army, he was a labourer and teamster. Private Woods enlisted at the age of 31 and was sadly widowed, with his next of kin listed as his parents, William & Sarah Woods of Orange. He embarked from Sydney with the 18th Infantry Battalion aboard HMAT Suevic on the 11th November 1916.
Throughout his service, private Woods was admitted to hospital several times with ill health, suffering repeatedly from trench foot in early 1918. He received a gun shot wound on the 9th August, 1918 and sadly died of his wounds the following day at the 61st Casualty Clearing Station, in Vignacourt France. Just 3 months later, the war would end. Private Woods dies at the age of 33.
Private Alexander Woods’ grave can be found at Vignacourt British Cemetery in France. Vignacourt Cemetery contains 584 First World War burials, over 400 of which were for brave Australian servicemen.
