Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Ernest (Vic) was the third of seven children of Louis Nathan Shepherd (born 1841 in London, England) and second wife Helen Lillian Barr Wilson (born 1860 at McCullums Creek in Craigie, Victoria). Louis, a Teacher married Helen in 1910 in Melbourne, Victoria. Louis died in 1911 in Melbourne, and Helen and the family moved to Tasmania.

Vic was working as a Carpenter in 1911 when he married Annie Clarke (born 1882 in Westbury, Tasmania) in 1911 in Tasmania. Vic and Annie moved to Western Australia, where Annie died in Perth in 1912. Vic returned to Tasmania and was working as a Carpenter when he enlisted in the AIF in April 1916. He was a Private with 40th Infantry Battalion when he was KiA at Armentieres in France in January 1917. Brother Lewis Norman (Private, Service No: 5229) was KiA in August 1916 and sister Muriel Helen (Staff Nurse, Australian Army Nursing Service) served in WWI.

Vic's belongings, returned to his mother, comprised 'belt, letters, photos, fountain pen (damaged) (National Archives Australia)

On 29 January 1917, the North Western Advocate reported 'Killed in Action. Widespread sympathy was expressed locally with Mrs Shepherd and family on receipt of the news that Private Vic Shepherd of 'C' Coy 40th Battalion had been killed in action. This is the second sacrifice made by this patriotic family, Sgt L N Shepherd having made the extreme sacrifice in August last, and at present, Sister M H Wilson-Shepherd is doing duty with the Australian Army Nursing Staff in London. Mrs Shepherd, who recently went to Western Australia with her daughter Mrs R Oliver, is returning to Tasmania' (Trove).
