Born in Scotland, James immigrated to Australia as a 2 year old in 1883, arriving in Brisbane, QLD on board the Duntrune.

James started work as a Jockey in Brisbane, QLD and was a Horse Trainer in Brisbane, QLD when he enlisted in the AIF in 1915.

James married Sara Sophia Beavis Perrett in Ipswich, QLD in 1909, and following his return from WWI, he lived in Bundamba, Ipswich QLD and Brisbane, QLD. He was not in paid employment after the War, and died on 22 May 1952
