He was 33  and the son of Alderman and Lucy Smith  of  Hobsey Wells, Bunes Hamlet, England.

Bures St Mary is a civil parish in the Babergh district of the English county of Suffolk. The parish covers the eastern part of the village of Bures, the western part being in the Bures Hamlet parish in Essex divided by the River Stour. The village is sometimes known as Bures and is on the border between South Suffolk and North Essex, in the heart of Constable Country and in the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
