The 1901 Census for Ratcliffe on Soar, Nottinghamshire, England,  shows him as having been born 1895 in West Leake, Nottinghamshire. It also states that the wife of James was Sarah rather than Rebecca.

He was a son  of James and Rebecca Spurr.


Next of kin-Wife, Mrs Annie Spurr, 261 Glenmore Road, Paddington, Sydney, New South Wales, later of Highwood Hill, Mill Hill, London. She subsequently left Australia and re-married in Swindon, Wiltshire, in 1919, becoming Mrs A. Halliday and lived in England.

He embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A71 Nestor on 28 February 1918. 19th Battalion, 21st Reinforcement.

He is remembered on the Ratcliffe on Soar - Holy Trinity Church War Memorial, Main Street, Ratcliffe on Soar NG11 0EB. The memorial is on the north wall of the nave. Dedication: 'Roll of Honour of the men of Ratcliffe on Soar who served their King and Country in the Great War 1914-1919.'
