Background

John James Lillis was born in Outtrim and attended the Korrumburra State School ,Gippsland,Victoria. Prior to enlistment he had served as an Army cadet from the age 14-18yrs. John's occupation was a printer.

His mother was Hannah Elizabeth and his father was John James Lillis.

John was killed in action on Messines Ridge, aged 19yrs and 1 mth whilst serving with 3rd Reinforcement, 37th Battalion. Some records show he may of served in B & C company. He has no-Known grave and is listed on Menin gate Memorial.

John James Lillis,1898 - 1917 KIA WW1 at [Belgium]Battle of Messines Ridge, memorial on Menin Gate. Oldest brother of Arthur George Francis Lillis KIA WW11 1941 in Damascus. Enlisted to fight in World War 1. John was assigned to the 10th Infantry Brigade, Third Australian Division 37th Battalion of the AIF in which he served as a Private.Embarked on the troop transport 'HMAT A9 Shropshire' bound for Plymouth, England. He arrived 11 November 1916, some 7 weeks later.20th Dec 1916 Embarked aboard the 'Princess Victoria' to France.14th Jan 1917 Marched out of Etaples after a period of training.17th June 1917 KIA Messines Ridge aged 19 yrs old. Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. His name is on Menin Gate, he has no known grave.

"2245 Private John James Lillis, 3rd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, 10th Infantry Brigade, of Outtrim, Vic. He enlisted on 23 May 1916 and embarked on HMAT Shropshire from Melbourne on 25 September 1916. Pte Lillis was killed in action on 8 June 1917 in Belgium.
