Awaiting Memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.

104 years ago today, on the 25th April 1917, Sapper Lyle J Ranger, 1st Australian Tunnelling Company, apprentice tailor and wheeler from Young Wallsend, New South Wales, was killed in action at Hill 60, Belgium, age 18 years, 10 months.

Born at Boolaroo, New South Wales on the 27th June 1898 to George (died 1931) and Sarah Jane (died 1955) Ranger nee Chute of Lake Road, Wallsend, New South Wales, Lyle enlisted with the Tunnelling Corps May 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Lyle is now resting at Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm), Belgium. Plot IV Row C Grave 12. Photos courtesy of Eddy Lin.

Mr Ranger’s name has been inscribed on the Young Wallsend Roll of Honour (photo, unveiled on the 9th November 1917, 21 names inscribed, 3 Fell). Name would be inscribed on the Boolaroo Public School Roll of Honour (whereabouts unknown). Name possibly inscribed on the Wallsend Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows', Prince of Wales Lodge Honour Roll (whereabouts unknown).

Sadly, there is no memorial inscription on the headstone of Harry’s parents to tell us of the supreme sacrifice of their son, so December 2019 I placed a memorial cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the memorialised grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service. ANGLICAN 2-152. 82.

Older brother Edward George (Service No-5636, born 1895, Granville, N.S.W., died 1941, Henty, N.S.W.) served with the Royal Australian Navy and is resting in an unmarked grave at Sandgate Cemetery. ANGLICAN 3-158. 23.

I will be placing a cross at Edward’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice.

Lest We Forget.
