Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served and suffered during The Great War, now resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

59 years ago today, on the 20th November 1962, Private Arthur James Livingstone Horder, Australian Army Pay Corps (Reg No-4482), carpenter from Vincent Street, Cessnock, New South Wales and Newcastle? N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 68. GENERAL-21. 67.

Born at West Maitland, New South Wales on the 4th May 1894 to James Thomas Livingstone and Margaret Jane Horder; husband of Agnes Horder nee Wells (married 20.3.1918 at Abergavenny, United Kingdom, died?), Arthur enlisted September 1915 with the 3rd Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 14.3.1917 (pleurisy, severe), 19.1.1918 (tuberculosis), 17.6.1918 (influenza, pneumonia, severe).

Arthur returned home August 1919 (with wife Agnes?), being discharged on the 26th September 1919.

Mr. Horder’s name has been inscribed on the Cessnock Citizens' Memorial (photos courtesy of David Harrower, unveiled on the 11th November 2015, 1696 names inscribed) and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I located Arthur resting in an unmarked grave, another Forgotten Digger of The Great War, so April 2016 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.

I will be submitting an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip to restore Honour and Dignity to Arthur.

Older brother Walter Edwin Livingstone (46th Battalion, Reg No-2918, born 1892, died 1950, Cessnock, N.S.W.) also served 1st A.I.F.

Younger brother Kenneth Euen Livingstone (34th & 46th Battalions, Reg No-1147, born 1898, died 1929, Cessnock, N.S.W.) also served 1st A.I.F.

Contact with descendants would be greatly appreciated.
