Son of Councillor James John and Frances PYE of Rivertsone, NSW
PRIVATE ALFRED ROSE PYE, eldest son of Councillor J. J. Pye, of Blacktown Shire, and nephew of our cricket champion, Mr. L. W. Pye. The boy, who was not 19 years of age when he enlisted, was of the third generation of the same family reared at the old homestead, Riverstone. He left Sydney on September 9, and was shot through the head and heart in an attack on a trench near Baupaume on February 26. He was a member of the Blacktown Rifle Club, and was a first-class shot. He left England for Fance as a sniper. His only brother says he is going to enlist to take his place as soon as he is old enough. A letter addressed to Mr. L. C. Davis, of Riverstone, was in the brave lad's pocket when he received the fatal wound in the heart. The bullet went right through the envelope. Councillor Pye's brothers (David and Robert) have also lost their eldest sons in the war, and another brother's (Charles's) eldest son has been twice wounded.
KILLED AT THE WAR.
Mr. J. J. Pye, of Liberty Hall, Schofields, thas received word that his son, Alfred Rose Pye, has been killed while fighting in France. He was only, 18 year's of age, and a lad of fine physique. The young soldier enlisted last June, and in October last went to Salisbury Plains, and had been in France about six weeks. He was a splendid rifle shot, and was selected as a sniper, and afterwards joined the bomb throwers. He has made the supreme sacrifice for his country, land the parents have the sympathy of the whole district in the loss of their fine son.
