Walter’s unit embarked from Adelaide on board HMAT A17 Port Lincoln on 1 April 1915. He fought at Gallipoli with the 16th Battalion where he sustained a severe chest wound in action on 7 August and was transferred to H.S. Delta. Walter was hospitalised at No. 2 Australian General Hospital on 12 August prior to being returned to Australia from Suez on board HMT Euripides on 29 August. He was discharged as medically unfit on 16 March 1916.
