Hubert Lancelot Oakes was born at Highland Valley near Strathalbyn South Australia on the 18th of May 1893. He was the son of Henry and Christina Oakes formerly Semple of "Glenwreath" Strathalbyn and later Woods Point near Murray Bridge. He was the brother of William Roy and Norman.

He was a single farmer aged 22 years and 3 months when he enlisted at Adelaide on the 10th of August 1915. He was 5'11" tall, medium complexion, brown eyes and dark hair.

He arrived in France on the 4th of April 1916 for service with the 12th/10th Infantry Battalion Reinforcements. He was reported missing in action at Poziers on the 25th of July 1916. A Court of Enquiry in June 1917 found that he had been killed in action between 23rd and 24th of July aged 23 years.

Included in his personal effects returned home was a book of poems.

His father Henry passed away on the 31st of March 1950 aged 83 years and his mother Christina on the 3rd of March 1954 aged 79 years. They lie in the Murray Bridge cemetery.
